Janson Coffee Farm

The Janson coffee farm is run by first and second generation Janson family members. Janson farms is a family owned Hacienda established in 1941, (originally a cattle farm), by Carl Axel Janson, an immigrant from Sweden. It was Carl’s sons Carl, Michael, Ricardo and Peter who established Janson Coffee on 1989. Their two coffee plantations are located on the Talamanca Mountain Range on the slopes of Tisingal and Baru volcanoes. Short name for Hacienda las Lagunas is their farm located at 1,350-1,400 meters above sea level, in the region of Volcán. Hacienda las Lagunas, named after its lagoons and wetlands, is located West of the Barú Volcano, with a rich volcanic soil and several natural springs.

The different lots of the coffee plantation are surrounded by areas of a natural reserve which serve as natural barriers to protect the plantation and are also a vital habitat for a large variety of birds and wildlife. Los Alpes was named after the Swiss Alps. This farm is located at 1600-1700 meters above sea level, in Tisingal, on the Talamanca mountain range of western Panama, NW of the Baru Volcano, bordering La Amistad International Park, a natural reserve which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a park that crosses the border from Panama into Costa Rica and is home to many species, including the famous Quetzal. Between the two farms are a total of 100 hectares of coffee planted with the arabica varieties Geisha, Caturra, Catuai and Pacamara.

Production

The Janson nursery has a selection of specialty-grade Arabica seeds to grow our four coffee varieties. On our farms, we’re all about quality production that works in harmony with nature. They nurture the soil with enzyme-rich microorganisms, avoiding pesticides and herbicides to keep everything as natural as possible. Each section of the farm is carefully managed to maintain traceability and ensure top quality. Our plantations are separated by lush forest, creating natural barriers against pests and helping to protect the region’s native flora and fauna.

Caring for the environment is at the heart of everything we do. 400 solar panels are used to power their farm and processing plant, and any leftover organic matter from processing is reused as fuel or fertilizer. They plant native seeds from our forests in our nursery to support reforestation and preserve our water resources. Fresh spring water from the land is used for our wet processing, further connecting us to the natural ecosystem. They’re fully committed to improving and protecting the environment.

The processing plant, or “beneficio,” was built in 1993 specifically to handle specialty coffee. It’s equipped to sort and separate coffee by quality and origin, allowing us to focus on the distinctive characteristics of each batch we produce.

Process

The Janson Coffee Farm uses a blend of modern technology and traditional artisanal methods for Natural and Washed processing, ensuring that they capture the very best quality in each batch. To preserve this quality, green beans are stored in a dedicated, temperature- and humidity-controlled facility, keeping them in perfect condition until they’re ready for the next stage.

This commitment to quality improvement has earned Janson multiple Best of Panama (BOP) awards. Year after year, their coffee consistently ranks among the best, securing spots on both the semifinal and final tables of this prestigious competition.
